This Veteran’s Day we’d like to say thank you all for your service! On November 11, 2022 it will be 68 years since “Veterans” Day was established by legislation, making it a legal holiday. Veterans Day tributes all those, living or dead, who have defended our Nation for any period, in any branch of the military, in times of war or peace. It’s important for us to express our gratitude, so we want to thank you for your services and dedication to our great country. We are very honored to dedicate this piece to you.
How did Veterans Day come to be?
Veterans Day was originally known as “Armistice Day,” commemorating the end of World War I, so it honors the Veterans who gave their lives in battle. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation. In an address to the nation on that day, he proclaimed,
“The reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory both because of the thing from which it has freed us, and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations (Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs, 2006).”
At the request of veterans’ service organizations, the 83rd Congress amended the 1938 statute by substituting “Armistice” with “Veterans.” This followed the outbreak of World War II and the Korean War, when it required all forces in the Nation’s history to stand together in battle. When this law was approved, November 11th became a day to memorialize and honor all Veterans.
