My husband and I want to thank Assisting Hands of Rockford and Xen our caregiver from Assisting Hands. He has gone above and beyond in helping Steve, who cannot use his hands at all and has real difficulty walking due to chemical exposures from Gulf War and having been a firefighter for several years. For my husband Steve, who has a nerve condition that slows him down and causes his leg to curl, Xen didn’t wait to be told—he brought in a handmade weighted rice bag to help keep Steve’s leg stretched. The OT was so impressed that he said he’d be using that idea with all his clients. That’s the kind of innovative care Xen brings. He exercises with Steve, something incredibly difficult due to Steve’s condition, yet Xen handles it with patience and encouragement. He bathes him with a gentleness and precision that I admit I don’t have. He even watches the water temperature with care and spoons each bite of food patiently when feeding him. These are not tasks—they are acts of love. They’ve developed a true friendship. They laugh, share moments, and Xen keeps Steve’s mind stimulated, which has been crucial as Steve has experienced mental decline. One day, I even found Xen crawling around our room, spreading bug powder so Steve could sleep peacefully. Who does that? He has worked a grueling, flexible schedule—coming at 6am, and then returning from 9-11pm for months just to accommodate our needs. Even when he’s on vacation, he worries about Steve’s wellbeing. That level of compassion and dedication is rare. Watching Xen train another caregiver recently showed me how deeply he understands his role. He is patient, knowledgeable, and a natural teacher. He doesn’t just care for Steve—he elevates the standard of care for everyone around him.
