Breast Cancer Awareness Month<\/strong><\/h5>\n

This October we are focusing on breast cancer in honor and support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is an invasive, widespread disease primarily affecting women 50 years of age or older, however it can also affect males and young adults, so it is important for both women and men to recognize the symptoms. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, so it accounts for thousands of lost lives each year globally and in the United States.<\/p>\n

What are some of the early warning signs that could indicate that you could have breast cancer? <\/em><\/p>\n

Signs of breast cancer may include:<\/p>\n

New lumps or swelling<\/p>\n

Discharge<\/p>\n

Breast pain, irritation, or redness<\/p>\n

Changes in size or shape of breast(s)<\/p>\n

You are encouraged to perform breast self-exams at least once a month. If experiencing signs listed above, reach out to your healthcare professional immediately to determine whether changes are life-threatening or safe. Although most bumps that you can feel are non-cancerous, it\u2019s best to just make sure. <\/em><\/p>\n

Breast cancer develops when abnormal growth in cells begins to multiply and spread to surrounding tissues. Cancer cells can invade other areas of the body by way of your lymphatic system, part of your body\u2019s immune system. This process is very invasive and can cause serious damage to the body, potentially leading to death.<\/p>\n

Risk Factors <\/strong><\/h5>\n

There are numerous risk factors for breast cancers, some of which are preventable and others that are not.<\/p>\n

Factors you can’t control include: <\/em><\/p>\n

Gender<\/p>\n

Age<\/p>\n

Race & ethnicity<\/p>\n

Obesity<\/p>\n

Family history<\/p>\n

Genetic factors<\/p>\n

Personal health history<\/p>\n

Dense breast tissue<\/p>\n

Menstrual reproductive history<\/p>\n

There are things you can change to decrease the likelihood of getting breast cancer.<\/p>\n

Factors you can avoid:<\/em><\/p>\n

Consumption of alcohol<\/p>\n

Lack of physical activity<\/p>\n

Poor diet<\/p>\n

Being overweight<\/p>\n

Not having children<\/p>\n

Not breastfeeding<\/p>\n

Birth control<\/p>\n

Taking hormones<\/p>\n

Early Detection Methods<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Breast Self-Exams and Mammograms <\/em><\/p>\n

Early detection of the illness can result in a high survival rate. As mentioned before, the easiest thing you can do monthly is to perform a breast self-exam. If you notice changes or are experiencing discomfort, schedule an appointment with your doctor. Another great test for detecting breast cancer is a mammogram. Abnormalities in the breast that may indicate cancer can be detected in a mammogram (x-ray) years before symptoms appear. It is recommended that all women 40 years of age and above should receive a mammogram annually.<\/p>\n

There are other preventative measures you can take as well, so remember that l Lifestyle changes such as healthier diet, limit consumption of alcohol, and being more active can help decrease your risk of breast cancer. In addition, other options aside from mammograms can include:<\/p>\n

Chemoprevention<\/p>\n

Breast cancer is scary, but by reading and understanding more about breast cancer, you are well on your way to implementing healthier life choices and working towards decreasing your chances of getting breast cancer.<\/p>\n
