Stay Safe This Spooky Season!

Halloween Fun and Breast Cancer Awareness in Tri-Cities!

Hello, Tri-Cities families! As the crisp autumn air settles over Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland, we’re reminded of the vibrant community spirit that makes our area so special. At Assisting Hands, we’re honored to serve seniors and their loved ones throughout the Tri-Cities, helping families navigate the joys and challenges of aging with compassion and support. With Halloween just around the corner this week, the holidays on the horizon, and October marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a perfect time to reflect on health, celebration, and creating meaningful moments with our elders.

Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when our community comes together to raise awareness, support survivors, and remember those we’ve lost. In the Tri-Cities, events like the annual Pink Ribbon Run in Richland or local health fairs at Kadlec Regional Medical Center highlight the importance of early detection and community support. For seniors, this month is especially poignant—breast cancer can affect anyone at any age, and regular screenings remain crucial even in later years!

If you have an older loved one who’s a survivor or facing health challenges, we’re here to help. Our caregivers can assist with transportation to appointments at facilities like Lourdes Hospital in Pasco, Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, and Trios Health in Kennewick, or provide gentle reminders for self-exams and mammograms. Let’s use this month to encourage open conversations about health, ensuring our seniors feel empowered and supported. Remember, early detection saves lives—schedule that check-up today!

Spooky (But Safe) Halloween Fun for Seniors

Halloween in the Tri-Cities is always a treat, with neighborhood trick-or-treaters lighting up streets in Pasco, pumpkin patches at the Country Mercantile in Richland, and festive events at the HAPO Center in Kennewick. But for seniors, the holiday can sometimes feel overwhelming or isolating. That’s why we’re sharing a few simple, senior-friendly ideas to make Halloween enjoyable and inclusive for your older loved ones:

  1. Host a Cozy Candy Handout at Home: Turn your front porch into a welcoming station for neighborhood kids. Seniors can sit comfortably in a chair, handing out treats while enjoying the parade of costumes. Add some fall decorations like hay bales or battery-operated pumpkins for a low-effort festive touch. It’s a great way for them to feel involved in the community without venturing far.
  2. Plan a Family Movie Night with a Twist: Gather the grandkids for a gentle Halloween-themed movie marathon at home. Classics like “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” or “Casper” are perfect for all ages. Pair it with easy snacks like caramel apples or popcorn, and let your seniors share stories from their own childhood Halloweens. This creates cherished memories while keeping things relaxed and indoors.

Our team at Assisting Hands can even step in to help with setup, companionship during the event, or post-celebration cleanup, ensuring everyone—especially your loved one—can participate without added stress.

Happy Halloween and Holidays Ahead!

If your loved one could use a hand this Halloween, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities, or as the holidays approach, reach out to us. We’re ready to provide personalized care that promotes independence and eases family burdens!

Wishing you a safe, joyful Halloween and a healthy start to the holiday season!

Warm regards, Tyrell & Lydia Sainsbury and Brett & Shalese Fredericksen
