A Long Way From Crackers and Coffee

November 14, 2025lbrown

When I first met this client, she was struggling. She had lost a significant amount of weight from not eating well. Most days, breakfast was nothing more than a few crackers and some coffee.

She didn’t have much appetite. Eating felt like a chore, and she certainly didn’t have the energy or motivation to cook something more. Her health—and her independence—were at risk.

Fast forward to today.

As I sat at her kitchen table this morning, she was enjoying a beautiful, complete breakfast:

  • A yogurt parfait

  • Avocado toast

  • Scrambled eggs

  • Sausage

It was a real meal. Nourishing. Colorful. Filling. And most importantly, she was enjoying it.

While she finished her breakfast, Kristi was already thinking ahead – washing berries and preparing a fruit bowl so that later, when her client wants a snack, something healthy and ready-to-eat will be waiting. That kind of quiet planning and care makes such a difference.

“I Don’t Know What It’s Like to Hate My Job”

As we visited, my client looked at me and said something that made my heart swell:

She told me how much she loves her caregiver. She talked about how grateful she is to have help in her home and how much it means to be able to stay where she is comfortable, surrounded by familiar things… and of course, her dog.

Then Kristi said something that truly stuck with me.

She told me that she hears people talk all the time about how much they hate their jobs. And then she smiled and said she doesn’t know what that feels like—because she loves her job.

She loves her clients.
She loves being in their homes.
She loves making their day a little easier, a little brighter, and a lot more dignified.

That kind of heart cannot be trained—it’s who she is.

A Relationship That Changes Everything

What has changed for this client is so much more than just food.

Kristi has built a relationship rooted in trust, consistency, and genuine connection. Because of that:

  • Meals are no longer an afterthought. They are prepared, planned, and shared with care.

  • The home feels alive—with conversation, laughter, and that wiggly, happy dog underfoot.

  • Our client feels supported, not “managed.” She is still in her own home, living her life on her terms, with the right support beside her.

These are the kinds of quiet victories that never make headlines but absolutely change lives. A caregiver like Kristi doesn’t just “complete tasks” — she notices the little things, anticipates needs, and shows up with kindness day after day.

Celebrating Kristi – and All the Caregivers Like Her

This month marks over a year that Kristi has been with this client, and it shows in every interaction. There’s an ease and a comfort between them that only comes with time and genuine care.

Kristi is dependable, thoughtful, and fully invested in the people she serves. She does more than what’s on a care plan—she brings heart into every visit. From preparing nourishing meals and planning snacks to simply being a steady, joyful presence in the home, she truly embodies what Assisting Hands is all about.

Kristi, we see you.
We appreciate you.
And we are incredibly grateful for the beautiful work you do.

Moments That Matter

This is why we do what we do. It’s not just about caregiving hours or checklists—it’s about helping people stay safe, loved, and well in the place they call home.

Today’s Moment That Matters is a kitchen full of warmth:
A client eating a hearty breakfast.
A dog bouncing around, happy and content.
A caregiver washing berries, planning ahead for one more small act of love later in the day.

These are the moments that add up to a better life.

And for that, we are so thankful for Kristi and caregivers like her who make these moments happen, one visit at a time.
