Assisting Hands Davis recently helped a local Veteran in assisted living save about $1,800 a month on home care by using VA Community Care Network benefits.

How We Helped a Local Veteran Save $1,800/Month on Home Care

December 10, 2025lbrown

This afternoon, Tim met with a local Veteran who has been paying out of pocket for his home care. He lives in an assisted living community, and like so many families, he assumed that because he was already in assisted living, his only option was to keep paying privately for any extra help he needed.

As they talked through his situation, Tim realized something important: this Veteran could likely have his home care covered through the VA Community Care Network (CCN)—even though he lives in assisted living.

By the end of the visit, we had a clear path forward that could save him about $1,800 every month on his home care expenses.

“I Didn’t Know That Was Even an Option.”

When Tim sat down with this Veteran, he learned:

  • He was receiving care from a private-duty home care agency.

  • He was paying entirely out of pocket for those visits.

  • No one had ever explained how his VA benefits might help cover that care.

Like many Veterans, he had heard bits and pieces about VA benefits but was never given a simple, step-by-step explanation of what might apply to home care—especially inside an assisted living community.

Tim, our in-house VA advocate (and a Veteran himself), walked him through how the VA Community Care Network works for eligible Veterans who need help with daily activities.

Yes, VA Community Care Can Apply in Assisted Living

One of the biggest surprises for this Veteran was learning that VA-covered home care isn’t just for people living in a private home.

For qualifying Veterans, VA Community Care can be used:

  • In a private residence

  • In a senior apartment

  • In an assisted living community

The key is that the care is provided by a VA-authorized home care agency and the Veteran meets the VA’s clinical and eligibility criteria.

Tim helped him understand that:

  • His need for help with daily tasks (like bathing, dressing, or personal care) matters.

  • His service connection and current VA status matter.

  • Where he lives is not always a barrier—assisted living does not automatically disqualify you from VA-covered home care.

From there, Tim outlined the next steps to coordinate with the VA and explore getting his care covered through the Community Care Network instead of his personal bank account.

What $1,800/Month in Savings Really Means

Saving about $1,800 every month is more than just a number on paper. For this Veteran, it can mean:

  • Less financial stress and more room in the budget for other needs.

  • The ability to continue his care longer without worrying about “running out of money.”

  • Peace of mind for him and his family, knowing he’s using benefits he’s already earned through his service.

These are the moments that matter—when good information, the right advocate, and a little time together can completely change a family’s outlook.

Tim’s Role as Our VA Advocate

Tim spends a lot of his time doing exactly what he did today:

  • Sitting down one-on-one with Veterans and their families

  • Reviewing their current situation and what kind of help they need

  • Explaining in plain language how VA Community Care and other VA home care benefits work

  • Helping them understand what questions to ask their VA provider or clinic

  • Partnering with families to navigate the steps to access the care they deserve

Because our agency is Veteran-owned and Tim is a Veteran himself, these visits are deeply personal. We know how complicated the system can feel. Our goal is to make it simpler and more accessible, not more overwhelming.

We Can Help Other Veterans, Too

If you or a loved one is a Veteran:

  • Paying out of pocket for home care

  • Living in an assisted living community, senior apartment, or at home

  • Feeling confused about what VA benefits might apply to caregiving support

You don’t have to try to figure it out alone.

We’re happy to sit down with you—just like we did today—and talk through your options. There is no obligation, just a real conversation about what might be available and how to move forward.

Note: Every Veteran’s situation is unique, and eligibility for VA programs is determined by the VA. The story above is an example of how we were able to help one Veteran understand and access his benefits.
