Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What in-home care services do you provide in Fort Myers?

We provide non-medical in-home care across Fort Myers and Southwest Florida, including personal care (bathing, dressing, grooming, and mobility), companionship, light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication reminders, and transportation. We also offer specialized care such as Alzheimer’s and dementia care, respite care, post-surgical care, and 24-hour care. Learn more about our services.

What is the difference between home care and home health care?

Home care is non-medical support with everyday activities such as bathing, meals, companionship, and errands, which is what most families need to age safely at home. Home health care is skilled, clinical care ordered by a physician, such as wound care or physical therapy. We focus on non-medical home care, and we also have nurses on staff to support needs like medication management.

Do you provide 24-hour and overnight care?

Yes. We provide 24-hour and overnight care, typically arranged in shifts so an alert caregiver is always present, day or night. Learn about our 24-hour care.

Do you provide Alzheimer’s and dementia care?

Yes. We provide specialized in-home Alzheimer’s and dementia care, and we match caregivers experienced in supporting memory loss with patience and safety. This is one of the most common types of care families in Southwest Florida ask us for. Learn about our Alzheimer’s and dementia care.

Can caregivers drive me to appointments and errands?

Yes. Our caregivers can provide transportation to doctor’s appointments, pharmacy trips, errands, and social outings, and can accompany you while you are there.

What if my needs change? Can I add or reduce hours?

Yes. Care needs change over time, and we can adjust your hours, visits, or care plan up or down as needed. There is no need to start over; just contact our office and we will update your plan.

I care for a loved one and need a break. Can you help?

Yes. This is called respite care, and it gives a primary family caregiver time to rest and recharge while we care for your loved one. Respite can be scheduled regularly or as a one-time need. Learn about respite care.

Do your caregivers work for Assisting Hands, or are they contractors?

Every caregiver is a W-2 employee of Assisting Hands, never an independent contractor. That means they are covered by our insurance and workers’ compensation, and your family is never exposed to the tax or legal risk of privately hiring an aide.

How do you screen your caregivers?

Every caregiver completes a Level 2 background screening through the Florida Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse before they are hired, which includes state (FDLE) and national (FBI) fingerprint-based criminal checks.

Are your caregivers insured and bonded?

Yes. All of our caregivers are bonded and insured for your protection and peace of mind.

Can I choose or change my caregiver?

Yes. We carefully match each client with a caregiver based on needs and personality, and if the fit is not right, just let us know and we will arrange a new match.

“I hired Assisting Hands to provide an aide for my 95 year old mother several hours a week. The person they sent not only became my mother's aide, she became her friend. She helped my mother in countless number of ways, at the same time treating her with respect and dignity and caring. In addition, the times that my mother fell ill and needed 24/7 care, Assisting Hands provided caring, competent aides to be there for her day and night. When my mom passed away a couple months ago 2 months short of her 98th birthday, not only was I in touch with her regular aide, but also the owner of the company and the person who did the scheduling for Assisting Hands (who I only spoke to, but never met) made sure to contact me to express their condolences. I could not have asked for better care for my mom and highly recommend this company.”
