Today is National Pet Day, and we have so many reasons we celebrate our pets.\u00a0 You may have heard that pets can help you live longer, but do you know why there are so many great health benefits<\/a> of pet ownership?<\/p>\n

Cardiovascular Health<\/h4>\n

Studies have shown that having a pet can help to reduce blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health.\u00a0 While it isn’t entirely clear why pet ownership helps with this, many believe that it is because having a pet has a calming effect.\u00a0 Additionally, dog owners are more likely to stay active than non-dog owners, presumably because their friend needs breaks.<\/p>\n

Mental Health<\/h4>\n

For the elderly that live alone, the companionship a pet can bring helps to fight off feelings of loneliness and depression.\u00a0 Having a pet around gives some seniors a sense of purpose – they have someone that depends on them daily.\u00a0 Pets enjoy being talked to, and it makes the day a little less lonely for their person.<\/p>\n

Social Icebreakers<\/h4>\n

Another great benefit of pet ownership is it can be a great icebreaker.\u00a0 My grandmother lived in a senior apartment building with her dog, Garth.\u00a0 When she and Garth moved in, so many residents were drawn to say hello to her, simply because they wanted to say “hi” to her dog.\u00a0 It was a great way for her to start conversations with others, and led to several long lasting friendships.<\/p>\n

Your Pet Might Benefit the Elderly<\/h4>\n

Dogs and cats make great companions for all!<\/p><\/div>\n

For those who find pet ownership is too much responsibility, they still enjoy a visit from a furry friend.\u00a0 There were so many seniors in my Grandmother’s building that enjoyed being around pets, but didn’t want the responsibility.\u00a0 I started bringing my cat for visits, and it was something many of the residents looked forward to.\u00a0 Spending time around my cat, petting her and watching her play seemed to cut the tension with some of the residents, and they all had smiles on their faces.\u00a0 If you have an elderly friend or neighbor that enjoys seeing your pet, consider making it a point to stop by with your furry friend a little more often.\u00a0 You and Fido will be the bright spot in their day!<\/p>\n
