She had not slept a full night since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Her sister called every Sunday and offered to come for the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>She always said no. <em>I\u2019m fine. I\u2019ve got it. He needs me. I couldn\u2019t possibly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One Sunday, she said yes.<\/p>\n<p>Her sister came. She slept.<\/p>\n<p>When she woke, her husband was sitting on the porch with her sister, laughing. He had not laughed in months.<\/p>\n<p>She cried. She said later, \u201cI thought I was the only one who could care for him well. I was wrong. And it was such a relief to be wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Why Accepting Help Matters<\/h2>\n<p>Caregivers are often some of the most generous people on earth. We give until there is nothing left. We say no to help as a point of pride.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But here is what we miss:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When we refuse to receive care, we deprive others of the joy of giving it.<\/p>\n<p><em>To let yourself be cared for is its own form of generosity.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Accepting help does not mean you are failing as a caregiver. It means you recognize that caregiving was never meant to be something you have to do completely alone.<\/p>\n<h2>Try This This Week<\/h2>\n<p>This week, say yes to one offer of help that you would normally decline.<\/p>\n<p>A friend\u2019s dinner. A neighbor\u2019s errand. A sibling\u2019s weekend.<\/p>\n<p>You do not have to explain. You only have to say two words:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYes, please.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then let someone love you for a moment.<\/p>\n<h2>A Weekly Moment of Beauty<\/h2>\n<p>Emily Dickinson wrote a poem so small it almost disappears. <strong>But it holds an entire philosophy of care:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf I can stop one heart from breaking,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I shall not live in vain;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If I can ease one life the aching,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Or cool one pain,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Or help one fainting robin<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Unto his nest again,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I shall not live in vain.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You who give care every day, you have not lived in vain.<\/p>\n<p>Let someone do the same for you.<\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div> <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What A woman had been caring for her husband, who had Alzheimer\u2019s, for four years.
