And yet, what a fantastic program from Medicare for families with someone suffering from dementia. It is designed to support people living with dementia. It is designed to support people living with dementia and their unpaid caregivers. It stands for <\/span>GU<\/b>iding an <\/span>I<\/b>mproved <\/span>D<\/b>ementia <\/span>E<\/b>xperience.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this blog, we want to let you know how great Medicare GUIDE is, help you quickly check eligibility, review the benefits of the program, answer questions you may have, and help your family take advantage of it if you can.<\/span><\/p>\n

First, let\u2019s review your <\/span>eligibility.<\/b>\u00a0 <\/span><\/h2>\n

The criteria are quite simple, but not everyone qualifies. Let\u2019s go through 5 questions together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are a few questions to answer<\/span><\/p>\n

Question #1<\/b>: <\/span>Do you have a family member suffering from<\/span> (moderate to severe) <\/span>dementia<\/span>? <\/span><\/h3>\n

While an official diagnosis will be needed from your doctor later in the process, you do not need to know how severe the dementia is. It will be diagnosed at a later time. If you answer <\/span>yes<\/b>, let\u2019s move to question #2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Question #2<\/b>: <\/span>Is your loved one enrolled in <\/span>original <\/span><\/i>Medicare, ie Medicare Part A and B<\/span>?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

If you do not know, check out the Medicare card\u2026. See the example below.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0If your answer is yes, then move to question #3.<\/span><\/p>\n

Question #3<\/b>: <\/span>Have you taken care of this family member<\/span>, like so many Americans do daily for their loved ones, <\/span>with no compensation<\/span>? <\/span><\/h3>\n

If yes, let\u2019s move to question #4.<\/span><\/p>\n

Question #4<\/b>: <\/span>Where do you currently live?<\/span><\/h3>\n

If your answer is at home, in an assisted living facility, you qualify. Move to question #5.<\/span><\/p>\n

Question #5<\/b>: <\/span>Confirm that you are not currently on hospice?<\/span><\/h3>\n

If your answer is yes to all of these questions, then <\/span>you likely qualify for 72 hours of respite care<\/a><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

No, provided your loved one qualifies, this program is entirely free to the family.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are there limitations on how the hours must be used?<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n

Yes. The hours must be used in 4-hour blocks. You have 18 4-hour blocks of time you can use however you please.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You can use them across the entire year (for example, 1 4-hour block every 3rd week), or over a short period of time (like 2 4-hour blocks weekly for 2 months). How you use your time is up to you and your needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

What if I do not use the hours for the year?<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n

The hours you have not used by the end of the year cannot be added to the hours of the following year. It is a \u201cuse it or lose it\u201d system.<\/span><\/p>\n

When does the year start and end?<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS<\/a>), which administers this program, runs on a fiscal year basis, with a year-end of June 30th.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
