Mark Diamond would seek out aging African-American homeowners on Chicago\u2019s West and South sides, and offer them the opportunity to fix up their homes through a free government program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1101 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/assistinghands.com\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/03\/imgres-300x157.jpg\" alt=\"Elderly-fraud-Elderly-care\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/03\/imgres-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2017\/03\/imgres.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In reality, however, Diamond was signing them up for reverse mortgages and running off with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the cash without doing zilch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, according to WGN. Over the summer, a judge found Diamond guilty of scamming some 47 homeowners out of a total of $2.3 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, this home repair scheme is one of many scams targeting seniors across the nation. In a 2010 telephone survey, one fifth of Americans over age 65 reported that they had been subject to some sort of financial fraud or abuse.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Older adults are susceptible to exploitation or abuse for many reasons. For one, they may lose some of their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">financial savvy,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> but not their confidence This means they many rush into transactions that might not be in their best interest. What&#8217;s more, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lower levels of cognitive function and decreased psychological well-being among some\u00a0older adults make them susceptible to financial victimization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fraud also persists because many victims feel ashamed about being taken advantage of. They tend to hide their experiences of victimization from trusted caregivers and even their closest family members. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you or a loved one are targeted by fraud, it\u2019s important not to let shame turn to silence \u2014\u00a0talking about elder fraud is the only way to reduce the stigma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To guard against fraud, educate yourself and your loved ones on common scams that repeat themselves over and over. The homeowner\/reverse mortgage scam is among the most prevalent, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncoa.org\/economic-security\/money-management\/scams-security\/top-10-scams-targeting-seniors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> National Council on Aging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Others include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Insurance fraud:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Regardless of age, it\u2019s easy to be fooled over the phone. Perpetrators may pose as a Medicare representative to get older people to give them their personal information. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The grandparent scam:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> This one really tugs at our heartstrings. Someone will call posing as the person\u2019s grandchild, and claim they\u2019re in a bad situation and they need money immediately. The caller will often say they can\u2019t tell their parents out of fear of getting in trouble. What\u2019s a loving grandparent to do? The best course of action is to say no, and contact a family member about the call.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Investment scams:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bernie Madoff\u2019s pyramid scheme may perhaps be the most well-known of its kind, but there are many smaller investment scams that can drain older adults of their hard-earned retirement savings. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you care for an older adult, AARP has<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/info-08-2013\/protect-your-parents-from-scams.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> some great tips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for protecting your loved ones, including unlisting their phone number and checking their annual credit reports to ensure they haven\u2019t already been targets of fraud. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The hard truth is that we\u2019re all vulnerable to scams and identity theft, at any age. Monitor<\/strong> <strong>all you statements on a regular basis.<\/strong>\u00a0This includes utility bills, bank accounts, investment and retirement accounts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Take precautions against Medicare fraud.<\/strong> If your Medicare card has your Social Security number on it, make a photocopy and black out the first five digits of your SS#. Also, never give out Medicare information over the phone or in answer to an email.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0Protect against check washing fraud. <\/strong>If you write checks, make sure that you use a pen with dark pigmented ink. Also, don&#8217;t carry your checkbook.
