Finding A Friend For Elder Care in Houston

Best Pets For Senior Care in Houston

There’s nothing better than cuddling up with a loveable pet. Even better are the myriad of benefits older adults living alone can have with their pets. These benefits include:

  • Affection
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Companionship
  • Improved mental focus

Here are some important factors to consider in Houston senior care and choosing the right pet for you or for your loved one.

Selecting The Right Dog

Each and every dog has his or her own personality. Thanks to decades of domestic dog breeding and training methods, some breeds are more predisposed to serving in the form of lap dogs or hunting dogs. It’s important to keep this in mind when looking for the right dog. Especially if you’ve never before owned a dog.

Of course, not all pit bulls, chihuahuas, and other breeds are the same. When it comes time to adopt, you’ll want to ensure that the dog interacts well with other members of the family. If the dog is calm and docile during the day, or if the dog is obnoxious and challenging to train you’ll want to make sure that someone is up to the task.

Adoption Centers, Pounds, And Shelters

If you or your family are thinking about adopting a dog, you’ll want to make sure that you’re in the know regarding the dogs past. Is this a rescue dog that might have been abused in the past? A lot of older dogs are given up for adoption because the owners could no longer care for them. Also, you’ll want to ensure that the dog is the right match for you and your family. You don’t want to have any life-threatening issues in the future for your dog.

Get Fit

Dogs require plenty of exercises. Walks are an ideal choice and a great low-impact way to get that exercise. Before you choose a dog, make sure that you’ll be able to help them with proper exercise. Are you up to the task? Do you have the room? Consider fencing in a portion of the yard to allow the space for your pet to roam freely.

Consider A Cat

Cats like to have independence and require far less energy than dogs. They’ll require food, water, litter boxes and perhaps an occasional visit to a pet groomer. Some cats are friendly, some are moody and temperamental and others tend to scratch, especially when you attempt to pick them up. Some people choose to have kittens declawed which you may appreciate later on down the road. Just as with dogs, you’ll want to be careful when you select a cat for adoption. Consider an older cat that needs a loving home and is already settled down and well tempered.

Parakeets And Cockatiels

Birds can also offer companionship and joy. Smaller birds may keep you company. Pet stores such as Petco have many beautiful birds that you can select from. The best thing about a parakeet is that you can actually teach them to whistle and talk. Be sure that you have a proper cage and a water bottle for birds. Always stock up on bird seed to feed your birds.

Remember: Your Pet Is An Investment

Consider the amount of time you’re able to spend with your pet before you choose. Caring for pets requires food and veterinarian care as well as grooming costs.
