Senior Home Care and the Sandwich Generation

March 30, 2016Blog, Caregiving, Health Plans, Senior CareAdmin

senior home careThink about a big club sandwich. You’ve got toasted bread on the bottom, sliced cooked turkey, fried bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, another toasted piece of bread, and then, basically, another sandwich on top. It’s delicious, but it can be a little hard to hold together, at least without a little help. That’s what the toothpick down the middle is for. Before you start daydreaming about a delicious club sandwich, let me remind you that you’re reading a senior home care blog. Now you’re probably thinking, “What does a delicious club sandwich have to do with in-home assistance and senior home care?” I’m glad you asked.

You’ve no doubt heard the term “Millennial” (in fact, you’re probably sick of hearing it); it refers to the generation born between the early 1980s and 2000s. There’s another generational term that you may not be as familiar with: the “Sandwich Generation.” Added to Webster’s Dictionary in 2006, the Sandwich Generation is defined as “a generation of people who are caring for their aging parents while supporting their own children.”

According to research from the Pew Research Center, 47 percent of adults in their 40s and 50s have a parent age 65 or older and are either raising a young child or financially supporting a grown (18 years or older) child. About 15 percent of middle-aged adults are providing financial support to both an aging parent and a child, and among all adults with at least one parent age 65 or older, 30 percent say their parent or parents need help to handle their affairs or care for themselves.

There’s a pretty good chance you’re sandwiched in the middle of providing for your own children and your parents. Much like that delicious club sandwich earlier, it might be a little difficult to hold together without all the meat and veggies sliding out the back. That’s where Assisting Hands Home Care comes in.

Assisting Hands is like the cellophane-tipped toothpick that helps hold it all together. Our caregivers come to your parents’ home and help you provide the care they need.

When you can’t do it all, give Assisting Hands a call. Then relax and enjoy a sandwich—you deserve it.
