A Message From The AH Home Care Livingston Owner

During the Summer of 2012, one of my closest friends was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. After the traditional treatments did not slow the progression of the disease, he opted for an experimental study. That, too, failed. I was present as his wife struggled to balance her own professional career and provide both mental and increasing physical support to her husband. I was present when this effort became overwhelming, and she eventually sought help. That help came in the form of an aide. I knew nothing of this kind of service and watched over the next few months as my friend went from a robust man to a shell of himself as his mental health began to deteriorate. I watched as this situation came to bear on his wife as I expected it would. None of this was surprising, much less unexpected. But what became a revelation of strength, both physical and mental, was watching the home health aide care for this man, hours per day, seven days per week, for months until his passing. She provided physical assistance, companionship, compassion, and empathy, attributes that were invaluable in his last days.

Fast forward six years and I am laid off from my then lifelong career as a banker and looking for a new path. After two years of searching for the “right fit” and realizing that there wasn’t one, I stumbled on a home care business for sale. This must have been the “right fit” because everything went smoothly from the moment I decided to make my best effort to purchase it. Midway through the process, however, having all kinds of anxiety and doubts, I did remember the older lady that helped my friend during his last months. Reflecting on my friend’s last days, it became clear that, after years of having little purpose beyond raising my son, this would give me a path to helping those that need compassionate and empathetic care. This was the “right fit”.
