Being a caregiver sometimes means that you experience negative feelings that make caregiving even more difficult. When that happens, you need to find solutions that help you to get past and through those feelings.
Remind Yourself You Don’t Have to Do Everything
Many caregivers have a really difficult time remembering that they don’t have to be the ones to do everything on their own. It’s almost second nature to want to just keep handling task after task, eventually getting to everything. The problem is that it doesn’t work that way. You’re only one person and you sometimes need help. Hiring elder care providers is a big way to get the help that you need right away and with very little learning curve.
Kick Perfection Out
If you’re still telling yourself that you need to get to the point where you’re doing everything perfectly, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Perfection has no place in caregiving because it’s so unattainable. Learn how to eliminate the desire for perfection from your life and you’ll be able to see just how much you do that is really great.
Step Away from What You Can’t Control
There’s a lot that you can control in your caregiving journey, but there’s even more that you can’t control. Start differentiating between the two and remind yourself that giving up trying to control things that are beyond your ability to control allows you greater peace.
Look for the Positive
If you’re only seeing the negative side of any situation, that’s going to bring you down even further. Almost every situation has something about it that is positive, even if it seems difficult to find. Take the time to look for the happier aspects so that you can allow that positivity to outshine the negativity.
Talking to Someone Can Help
Talking to a therapist or counselor that you trust can help you to deal with your negative feelings as a caregiver. This is especially true when you’re not sure what’s behind those feelings and you need to work to find the underlying issue.
When you notice that you’re experiencing negative feelings more often, stop and figure out why. From there you can start to craft a solution.
