{"id":14071,"date":"2023-03-22T16:24:48","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T16:24:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/29\/?page_id=14071"},"modified":"2023-03-22T17:44:39","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T17:44:39","slug":"developmental-disability-awareness","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/29\/newjersey\/monmouth\/services\/developmental-disability-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"Developmental Disability Awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h3>March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14088\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14088\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/29\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2023\/03\/DDAM-2023-Poster-ENG.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/29\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2023\/03\/DDAM-2023-Poster-ENG-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Disabilities Awareness Month 2023 Artwork by Jamila Rahimi\/Art Enables<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is a nationwide event to raise awareness about inclusion and addresses the barriers people with developmental disabilities face to ensure everyone has equal access to opportunities in all aspects of life.<\/p>\n<p>President Ronald Reagan made a public proclamation &#8211; dedicating the month to increasing public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>That goal is the same in 2023 and focuses on the importance of inclusion and living life side-by-side.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s theme is\u00a0<em>Beyond the Conversation,\u00a0<\/em>focusing on the question, &#8220;what next?&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>April is Autism Awareness Month<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/29\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2023\/03\/autism-gdb1dd7e17_1280.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/29\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/132\/2023\/03\/autism-gdb1dd7e17_1280-185x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismspeaks.org\/what-autism\">Autism Speaks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Autism isn&#8217;t just one thing-it is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is a combination of many different symptoms that cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning.<\/p>\n<p>We know that there is not just one catch-all autism stereotype, but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges and each person with autism is unique.<\/p>\n<p>Two key characteristics of autism according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7082249\/\">National Institute of Health<\/a> \u00a0are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction<\/li>\n<li>Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is a nationwide event to raise awareness about inclusion and addresses the barriers people with developmental disabilities face to ensure everyone has equal access to opportunities in all aspects of life.
