Located on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Florida coastline, Boca Raton was originally inhabited by Tequesta Indians. In the eighteenth century, construction of the railroads allowed access to the region by new settlers. Amongst these settlers were a group of Japanese farmers who cultivated the land for pineapples. The land boom gave way to further settling of the region in 1925, and in 927 the original Town Hall was constructed. This landmark building is still a tourist favorite today, as it is home to the Historical Society and its History Museum. During World War II, and where the airport stands today is the original site of the United States Army’s only war-time radar training school. Expansion of the farming communities increased the population of the town by the 1960s and 1970s. And IBM moved one of its computer facilities to the town, allowing the city to become famous as the place that the first IMB personal computer to be built in 1981.

Perhaps the most interesting fact about the city has to do with how people interpret its name. Boca Raton is often interpreted by several people as “mouth of a rat.” This is most common when one thinks about the heavy Spanish influence throughout the state and more specifically the Palm Beach region. However, for those who are familiar with nautical lingo, the town’s name actually fits the area perfectly. The word “Boca” means inlet and the word “Raton” refers to jagged rocks. When you consider this point of view, Boca Raton is actually the perfect name for the gorgeous city.
