Caring for an elderly family member who is in the middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease can be incredibly intimidating. There is so much going on and there can be so much for you to keep up with on a daily basis. Keeping your cool is one of the best ways for you to handle what pops up as it arises.
Stay Calm and Use a Calm Speaking Voice
It might feel like you need to shout and yell, and you can definitely do that when you’re on your own. But when you’re talking to your elderly family member, you need to stay calm and use a calm voice. That helps your elderly family member to stay calm as well and can keep the situation from blowing up into one that is out of your control entirely.
Reassure Your Senior Often
Alzheimer’s disease brings a lot of changes to your caregiving journey and to your aging family member. Those changes can be terrifying for her and as such, she might be seeking a lot more reassurance than she ever has before. Take the time to remember that this is scary for her and offer reassurance as often as you can.
Written Cues and Reminders Can Help
Many caregivers think that at this stage, nothing much can help. If your elderly family member is still able to read, however, you might be surprised to find that written lists, cues, and reminders can be a big help. Try leaving a note on the kitchen counter that reminds your aging family member where she is, what day it is, and what is going on that day. You might be happily surprised to find her referring to it often.
Educate Yourself so You Know What to Expect
The more that you as a caregiver know and understand about these middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease the more prepared you can be for those changes. Do as much reading as possible and consider joining a support group. You’ll get much-needed support and learn so very much.
Make sure that you mention changes to your elderly family member’s doctor as soon as you notice them. The smallest changes in health or behavior can be a sign that something else is going on.
