As a family caregiver, you probably spend an awful lot of your time concerned with your senior’s safety. It’s also important to take a look at how to keep her safer at night when she’s sleeping.
Clear Clutter Away from Around the Bed
During the day, clutter and items around your senior’s bed are probably easy for her to avoid. At night, though, that becomes so much more difficult for your aging adult to do. You might want to consider clearing away area rugs that don’t have a rubberized backing, too. Get the help of elderly care providers if you’re not sure what might be too much clutter around your senior’s bed.
Keep an Emergency Phone Number List Next to the Bed
In the cloud of sleep, it’s easy to forget lots of important things, such as numbers that your elderly family member normally knows. Having a list of emergency phone numbers right by the bed enables her to call someone for help without a struggle. Consider laminating the list so that it’s less likely to become damaged over time.
Keep Lamps and Flashlights Available
Easy access to a lamp ensures that your senior can see if she needs to in the middle of the night, but what about if the power goes out? It’s also a good idea to make sure that there’s a flashlight readily available and that you check the batteries often. Flashlights with looped handles can be hooked over the bedpost or on a hook you hang low enough for your senior to reach easily from bed.
Restrict Smoking to Outside Only
If your senior is a smoker, there’s a chance that she at one time smoked inside all the time, even in bed. Restricting smoking to being an outside only activity helps to ensure that it’s treated as safely as possible. Of course, ideally you might want to help your elderly family member quit smoking, if possible.
Consider Bed Rails and Other Tools
There are a ton of different tools that can help your senior to stay safer in her bed. Bed rails are an easy way to give your aging adult some stability and a certainty that she won’t roll out of bed during the night. Pressure pads can also sound an alarm in your room when your senior gets up in the middle of the night.
Talk to your aging adult about what might help her to feel safer when she’s in bed at night. Once you have a plan, you can start to implement it.
