Driving a car gives people a sense of control, freedom, and access to opportunities. As people grow older, the privileges associated with driving remain important. Aging, however, can be a detriment to driving. Doctors are aware of this fact yet hesitate to discuss driving with older patients.<\/p>\n

Why do seniors have a higher risk for vehicle collisions?<\/h2>\n

Older drivers involved in vehicle accidents and fatalities make headlines, such as an 80-year-old man who careened down the wrong lane of a highway and killed a family of four; or, an 86-year-old southern California man who crashed into a farmer\u2019s market and ended the lives of 10 people.<\/p>\n

For every mile driven, seniors over the age of 75 have a higher risk<\/a> of being involved in a car accident. The likelihood of vehicle collisions that result in fatalities increases only slightly after age 65 but spikes dramatically after age 80.<\/p>\n

How does driving impact seniors\u2019 independence?<\/h2>\n

Driving is a privilege that must be earned. As seniors age and their driving abilities are questioned, they may understandably feel a sense of loss. Elderly individuals might blame others, attempt to justify their actions, and ultimately feel depressed at the thought of not driving again.<\/p>\n
