\u201cWe do a lot of laughing,\u201d Anita chuckles, when asked to describe her relationship with her caregiver Anna.<\/p>\n

Eleven months ago, Anita’s husband contacted Assisting Hands Home Care, Serving Brevard County<\/a>, to provide daytime care during the week while he was at work. She\u2019d been diagnosed with a progressive debilitating disease and needed a little help when performing her daily tasks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anna recalls the first day that she met Anita. A few other people were in the room, discussing the logistics of her care and her daily routine. Anna noticed that Anita was sitting off to the side, looking uncomfortable. Immediately she approached Anita. \u201cI decided to give her all of my attention at that moment. Make her feel comfortable. Make her feel loved. I didn’t want to make her feel like she\u2019d be losing her independence.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anita recounts her appreciation of that first small gesture, remembering the fear and insecurity that she felt when it was time to call in a caregiver. \u201cIt\u2019s not fun becoming handicapped and giving up things,\u201d she says. As her health declined, she remembers thinking, \u201cWho will help me? Who will be there?\u201d (See also: “When I am old…” on our FaceBook page for more reflections from Anita<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

But Anita was in for a beautiful surprise in the form of her new caregiver Anna. They quickly discovered that the two of them had much in common, from the places they\u2019d lived to their religious views to their music preferences. \u201cIn about two weeks, we were very close,\u201d Anna says.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe think alike,\u201d Anita agrees. \u201cI\u2019ll be thinking we should make a fruit salad<\/a>, and she\u2019s already pulling fruit out.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anna helps Anita with her daily tasks like dressing, doing her hair, going to appointments, and cooking. But beyond the \u201cto-do\u201d lists, the two ladies just like to have fun together. For example, the interview for this post interrupted their lively game of\u00a0Words With Friends<\/i>. They say that they also like to bake together, go to church functions, and even attend the occasional fashion show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anita has taken a special interest in adult coloring books lately, a hobby that she shares with Anna. \u201cWe just color and talk,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019d like to bring coloring supplies to a nursing home,\u201d she adds, hoping to cheer the residents with their company and combat loneliness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anita and Anna\u2019s colorful artwork seems to be a reflection of their relationship. \u201cWe inspire each other,\u201d Anna says. \u201cSometimes we fight,\u201d she smiles as Anita sticks out her tongue, \u201cbut then in two minutes we\u2019re friends again.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anita\u2019s worries in the beginning of her journey with Assisting Hands Home Care have turned into a source of peace. \u201cI don\u2019t have to depend on my daughters and husband for everything. [Having a caregiver] has relieved some stress and provided rest for them. There\u2019s nothing that Anna won\u2019t do. Everyone thinks she\u2019s a gem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Anna echoes her sentiments. \u201cWe needed each other. Our relationship is\u2026inexpressible.\u201d Then she adds, \u201cShe\u2019s my sunshine.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What beautiful descriptions: sunshine and gems\u2014sources of light and color. Just like these two lovely women and the caregiving relationship they\u2019ve come to share.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
