Home Care in St. Pete Beach FLAs your parent ages, there may be a number of concerns running through their head, such as wrinkles, hair loss, memory loss, mobility problems, and other issues that may cause disruptions to their everyday life or self-esteem. While there is no surefire way to completely prevent these things from happening to your loved one, there are things that can be done to keep the elder healthy and vibrant.

With some help, your elderly parent will be able to follow these tips for a healthy body and mind that will stay with them as they get older.

  • Stay physically active. This is something many seniors should be doing, but are not. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce mortality rates, improve sleep habits and memory, and strengthen the bones. It can also help promote more energy and a better mood. The elder should strive for about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day, like walking, jogging, or swimming.
  • Eat a healthy diet. A diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats will help older adults maintain a healthy weight. This kind of diet can also help reduce their risk of a chronic disease or illness. It is also important that they try to avoid sugar and saturated fats, as these items can have the opposite effect on the elder’s health.
  • Socialize. Connecting with friends and family frequently has been proven to improve the mental and cognitive health of older adults. Even if these loved ones are unable to visit the elder often, encourage your parent to send them an email or letter, connect with them on Skype, or use social media websites.
  • Quit smoking. Not only can smoking greatly age the elder’s skin, resulting in more wrinkles and age spots, but it can also cause a variety of health problems to arise. This includes lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease. Kicking the smoking habit is not an easy task for most people. In order to help your loved one be successful in this task, they should discuss it with their doctor. Their physician should be able to recommend some programs that will help them quit.

With these tips your loved one will be able to age well and stay healthy for years to come. Doing these things alone may not give the elder the motivation they need, so consider having a home care provider help them reach their health goals.
