4 New Year’s Resolutions Your Senior Can Achieve This Year

December 31, 2021Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Healthy Habits, Nutrition

Making New Year’s resolutions can be beneficial for seniors in many ways. Having something to strive for, to look forward to in the new year, is just as important as the actual improvement achieved by the resolution. You can also make these resolutions and do them with your senior parent so that both of you will be ahead of the game when the new year begins:

Eat Healthier

No one wants to think about eating healthy during the holidays when there are so many delicious treats to eat. But if you focus on eating healthy or at least not over-indulging on cookies, candy, and other treats you will not be starting off the new year feeling sick and sluggish from all that sugar and the rich foods that are typically enjoyed during the holidays. Eat some holiday treats but stick to just your favorite treats and only eat a small amount of them. Balance those out with some healthy meals in between. That way you can still get a taste of the holidays without careening off of a healthy diet.

Get More Sleep

Sleep is essential for good health and most people, especially most seniors, don’t get enough of it. Your senior loved one doesn’t have to wait until the new year to get better sleep and neither do you. As a holiday surprise get your senior parent a new mattress, a new bed, or some new bedding and cozy pajamas to help them sleep better. You also may want to get a senior home care provider to be with your senior loved one at night to help them sleep more peacefully. Many seniors get anxious at night being all alone. A senior home care provider who is there overnight can give both you and your senior loved one some peace of mind so that you both sleep better.

Move More

Seniors need to move more, just like most everyone does. Seniors can start adding just a little bit of extra movement to their days right now and start building on that to be healthier in the new year. A five or ten minute walk today will be a 20 or 30 minute walk by the time the new year starts and that will help your senior loved one get a good jump start on a healthy new year. Exercising is something that needs to be done daily in order to establish it as a habit so why not start today?

Start A Gratitude Journal

The power of gratitude can help improve mental and physical health. A gratitude journal is an easy way to shift your focus to the wonderful things in your life and help maintain a positive frame of mind. Buy your senior loved one a fancy journal and some great pens so that they can start writing down all the things they are thankful for today.
