5 Ways Home Care Can Help Older Adults Find Ways to Stay Busy

May 8, 2020Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Home Care Services in Seminole FL, Keeping Busy with Home Care

One of the things that many older adults struggle with is boredom. This is particularly true for seniors who live alone and have some trouble getting out of the house on their own. When your aging relative is bored, it can have a negative effect on their mood. They may feel sad, lonely, or even depressed. Yet, it isn’t always easy to find things to do alone. That’s where home care can step in and spend some time each week doing things with your aging relative to help keep them busy.

1: Jigsaw Puzzles

Jigsaw puzzles are an excellent way for seniors to pass the time because they are both relaxing and stimulate the brain. Jigsaw puzzles are an age-old activity that your aging relative may have engaged in as a child. Today, they are available with a vast variety of pictures and in many different sizes. This means that they appeal to almost everyone and can be done by people of any skill level. If your aging relative likes a challenge, try a 1,000 or even 3,000-piece puzzle. If they have cognitive issues, consider using a puzzle with fewer and larger pieces.

Home care providers can help older adults to select new puzzles to try and help them to set up the space for doing a puzzle. Home care providers can also spend a little time with the older adult working on the puzzle, giving them a goal to bond over.

2: Conversation

Nearly everyone enjoys spending some time in good conversation with others. However, spending a great deal of time at home alone can mean not having many opportunities to talk to others. When home care providers come to visit, they give your older family member someone to chat with about any topic they like.

3: Craft Projects

Seniors who like working with their hands may enjoy doing craft projects. Whether it’s knitting, sewing, or another kind of craft, a home care provider can provide assistance. They can read the small print of instructions, thread needles, or perform other parts of the craft that are difficult for the senior.

4: Card Games

Many older adults grew up playing card games. Some may even have been part of card clubs at some point in their lives. Though home care providers may not know the rules of every card game your aging relative likes to play, they are willing to learn of the senior can teach them.

5: Set Up Activities for the Week

Sometimes older adults simply need some ideas for activities they can do through the week or some help getting set up to do them. For example, if the older adult needs some ideas for crafts, the home care provider can help them to research them on the Internet and assist with gathering the supplies they will need.
