Caregivers frequently find themselves so busy that they seldom see family and friends. This can cause them to lose touch with people, perhaps even putting some relationships in jeopardy. In addition, not being able to connect with other people can leave caregivers feeling lonely and isolated. However, even when caregiver duties keep you busy, there’s no need to lose touch with others. Below are 5 ways you can maintain connections.
#1: Use Social Media
Today’s technology allows caregivers to maintain a sense of connection just by picking up their smartphone or other device. Spending a couple minutes on social media while your aging relative isn’t in need of your help can help you to feel more connected. Seeing photos of friends and family lets you see what they are doing and share in their experiences by commenting on their pictures.
#2: Make a Phone Call
Even with all the latest technology at your fingertips, sometimes there’s nothing better than hearing the voice of someone you care about. There’s nothing wrong with taking a few minutes out of your day to make a phone call or two. Most caregivers have downtime during the day while their older family member sleeps or doing something else. Use that time to chat with friends or family.
#3: Meet for a Cup of Coffee
Try arranging a quick coffee date with a friend. You could meet for coffee early in the morning before your caregiver duties begin. A coffee date doesn’t need to take much time, but it can be just enough to catch up and maintain your friendships.
#4: Invite People to Visit
If the older adult isn’t opposed, there’s no reason caregivers cannot invite someone to visit while they are with the senior. In fact, they might enjoy the company and a change in their usual routine. Ask friends or family members to stop in to see you while you’re looking after your aging relative. Friends might be willing to spend their lunch break from work with your or come over at the end of their workday for a bit.
#5: Take a Break with Home Care
Another way for caregivers to get the time they need to maintain connections with others is by hiring home care to take over a few hours per week. While home care is with our older family member, you’re free to do whatever you like. That means you can go out for dinner with a friend or visit another family member without worrying about whether your aging relative is getting the care they need.
