Six Benefits of Alzheimer’s Care at Home

February 24, 2023Becky MoultrieAlzheimer's and Dementia, Blog Posts, Home Care

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease can be incredibly challenging and demanding for family caregivers. As the illness progresses, patients often need constant attention and care, which can feel impossible for family caregivers to manage on their own. That’s when Alzheimer’s care at home can make a huge difference and ensure that everyone involved has the help that they need.

Familiar Environment

Possibly one of the biggest benefits of care at home for Alzheimer’s patients is that the patient does not have to leave their home. People with Alzheimer’s disease often have a difficult time being in unfamiliar situations and environments, especially as the disease progresses further. When family members prioritize keeping environments familiar and safe, that can help immensely. Bringing caregivers into the home ensures that the Alzheimer’s patient is able to stay at home, avoiding distress and confusion as much as possible.

Family Involvement

Being a family caregiver to someone who has Alzheimer’s disease is not always easy. By bringing care services into the home, families are typically better able to be involved in the patient’s care when they have the time and the energy to do so. This allows family members to feel more involved in the care of someone that they love and want to help. Family members are also better able to offer emotional support because they’re being supported as well.

Personalized Care

Bringing Alzheimer’s care into the patient’s home offers the opportunity to ensure that the care plan is highly personalized to the family’s needs. Every person with Alzheimer’s disease is facing different challenges. When Alzheimer’s care at home is able to focus on placing attention and care where it’s needed most, patients are more likely to feel secure and less distressed.

Flexible Schedules

No one family has the same schedule, especially in today’s busy modern world. When it comes to caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease, it’s important to have home care options that allow for flexible scheduling. That ensures that everyone involved has help with daily tasks if needed and can still meet other commitments and obligations.

Reduced Risk of Hospitalization

People with Alzheimer’s disease are unfortunately at risk for injury or other issues that might require hospitalization. Unfortunately, spending time in the hospital can be scary and intimidating, and it also ups the risk of exposure to even more germs and infections. In-home care especially for Alzheimer’s patients can greatly reduce the likelihood of hospitalization.

Improved Quality of Life

Creating a safe and familiar environment for someone with Alzheimer’s disease improves quality of life immensely. Caregivers are able to spot needs immediately and ensure those are met. This helps to reduce anxiety while also reducing isolation and feelings of depression. Practical hands-on care is important, but how people with Alzheimer’s disease feel is equally important.

Alzheimer’s care at home offers a variety of different benefits for everyone involved, including patients and caregivers alike. Individualized care, a safe and familiar environment, and committed family participation on a regular basis are all pieces of the puzzle.
