It is important that your elderly loved one stays as safe as possible. If you are worried that your elderly loved one will fall because they don’t have good balance, that is a normal concern. Many family caregivers worry that their elderly loved ones will fall and get injured. With this being said, there are some ways that you and senior care providers can help your elderly loved one to get better balance.
Being More Physically Active
If you want to help your elderly loved one get better balance, you will need to encourage them to be more physically active. Research shows that people who exercise more and who are more physically active have better balance. There are numerous ways that your elderly loved one can increase their physical activity. They can go for walks, hike, ride a bike, go swimming, go for a jog, do planks, and so much more. If your elderly loved one is regularly physically active, this can greatly improve their balance.
Medication Management
Did you know that some medications can cause a person to become dizzy and/or drowsy? If your elderly loved one is taking a medication with these side effects, this could affect their balance. It could greatly increase their chances of falling and getting injured. If you believe that your elderly loved one’s medications are causing them to have balance issues, be sure that you talk with their doctor. There might be other medications your loved one could take that don’t cause dizziness and/or drowsiness.
Better Diet
Your elderly loved one might have balance issues if they aren’t eating properly. If your elderly loved one isn’t getting enough nutrients, vitamins, and minerals in their diet, this could increase their risk of becoming drowsy, dizzy, or weak. Their body might not be strong enough to keep them from falling. The good news is that there are many foods that can help your elderly loved one to improve their balance. You or senior care providers should ensure that your loved one is eating enough vegetables, fruits, lean meats, healthy fats, and whole grains. By doing so, you can reduce your elderly loved one’s chances of having balance issues.
Many senior citizens experience balance issues. With that being said, this doesn’t have to be the case for your elderly loved one. By making sure that your elderly loved one follows the tips mentioned here today, you can help them to reduce their chances of having balance issues.
