Six Overlooked Signs and Symptoms of Heart Disease in Seniors

September 13, 2019Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Caregivers in Seminole FL, Heart Disease and Seniors

Something for senior caregivers to consider is the fact that several of the signs and symptoms of heart disease have the potential of being overlooked. While this is not always easy, it can be done sometimes when these symptoms onset slowly. In the event that these overlooked signs bypass caregivers for a long period of time, it can make the care and treatment of heart disease much harder in the long run.

Other than Heart Attack Signs and Symptoms

So, you know that chest pain or the standard symptoms of heart attacks are not the only indicators of heart trouble. Some key symptoms may also help provide you with the knowledge that a senior is facing possible heart issues. It may not be a true symptom that means surgery or serious medical care is immediately necessary, but it may be important to see the doctor for a checkup to make sure that something more serious is not involved.

Six Overlooked Signs and Symptoms of Heart Disease

Of course, chest pain is an indicator of a heart attack or heart disease. There are also many common signs and symptoms of heart disease, while some of them are overlooked as being simple results of the aging process. Some other overlooked symptoms include the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Swelling in legs, ankles, or feet
  • Uneven heartbeat

While fatigue and shortness of breath are common symptoms that come with many different causes of heart disease, they are also common symptoms with other, less serious illnesses. In the event that your senior loved one may think they are simply tired or falling out of shape, then it could be ignored that these are actually early signs of heart disease.

Bring in Caregivers to Recognize these Symptoms

With the occurrence of any of these health issues, it may become important for your senior loved ones to have a caregiver of some sort. It is understandable that they may not be able to give up independence or living alone, but with issues like these coming into your seniors’ lives then home care may be important. It can help determine the best times to visit the doctor and always make sure that communication is made if an emergency occurs. In this manner, it can help with the care of your loved one without being overbearing as well.

After all of this, it will lead to the best care for your senior loved ones, especially if there is any reason to believe that they have past causes or risks for heart disease. With a caregiver, there is the potential to see any possible signs or symptoms of heart disease, especially the most common ones. While these signs and symptoms are common, they often overlap with other illnesses as well or seem to be simple results of the aging process, so caregivers for your seniors will be able to provide even greater recognition and contact with necessary medical professionals and family members.
