Any medical procedure or surgery carries risks with it. As you are considering the risks of an upcoming procedure for your parent, it is important not to overlook one that has little to do with the procedure itself, but can be very dangerous, very quickly. This risk is blood clots, and the risk is greatly increased among those who undergo surgery or medical procedures, or who have been limited to their bed due to an injury. Knowing how to protect your senior from blood clots during these times is an important step in protecting their health as they age.
Use these tips to protect your senior from blood clots after surgery or an injury:
- Talk to your senior’s doctor about their personal risk for blood clots so they are aware of all risk factors including personal history, family history, and others
- If the doctor recommends them, ensure your senior wears compression stockings during and after the procedure
- As soon after the procedure as the doctor says is safe, get your parent moving. The more they are able to move around, the lower their risk of suffering a blood clot. Even if they are unable to get out of bed, make sure their arms and legs move as much as possible
- Encourage your senior to keep their arms and legs elevated to encourage circulation
- If your parent is prescribed blood thinners, give them regular reminders to make sure they take them when and how they are supposed to
Flexibility in their schedule is often something family caregivers struggle with. Just because you have taken on the responsibility of caring for your parent doesn’t mean the rest of your obligations and responsibilities go away. This can leave you feeling as though you don’t have enough time or energy to do it all. This is where senior care can make a huge difference. A senior home care services provider can step in on a schedule that is right for you and for your parent to manage specific care tasks, offer companionship and support, help your parent take care of their home, run errands with them, and more. This means your parent gets the benefits of diversified, dedicated care and can maintain more of their independence, while you get the benefits of more time, less stress, and the ability to handle your to-do list with confidence.
