Elder Care in St. Petersburg FL
It’s not uncommon at all for family caregivers to hear quite a bit of critiquing from other family members about how things are going with their elderly loved one. Usually this criticism is well-meaning, if a bit barbed at times.
Everyone’s Perspective Is Different
Other family members may not spend as much time with your elderly loved one as you do. They also may have had a friend or acquaintance who had similar health problems as your loved one but treated the condition differently. Regardless of the reasoning, perspectives can be very different. That can be a beautiful thing, but not when someone else is using that different perspective to beat you up emotionally or to constantly tell you that you’re wrong.
Inform Critics about What Care Plan Your Loved One’s Doctor Developed
When you are getting more than a fair dose of criticism, let your critics know what you, your loved one, and your loved one’s doctor have established as part of her care plan. There may be very valid reasons why you and your loved one’s medical team have chosen one treatment plan over another and your critics may not understand that.
Ask Critics to Pitch In
It’s also possible that the people offering criticism aren’t as involved in your elderly loved one’s care as they could be. Invite them to participate more often in your loved one’s day-to-day care so that they can see how things are for your loved one on a daily basis. You never know, but pitching in more often might give your critics a flash of inspiration that solves a problem for you and your elderly loved one.
Hold Regular Family Meetings to Keep Everyone Informed
Another reason that some family members feel more inclined to criticize is that they may not have a consistent understanding of your loved one’s health. Consider setting up regular family meetings or conference calls in which you outline any new developments. Having regular updates in a more formal setting where everyone can ask questions may help to alleviate some of the criticism.
If you’re still hearing a lot of criticism, it’s more important than ever that you’re taking care of yourself. Hire elder care providers to stay with your loved one and take time away for yourself.
