What Helps an Overstressed Senior?

November 25, 2022Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Healthy Habits, Stress Relief

Do you know what’s causing your senior to feel more stressed than she should be? There can be literally dozens of different answers to that question, but until you and your elderly family member talk it out, you will only be guessing. Finding tools that help her, like elder care services, is so much easier when you have a full picture of her needs and what isn’t working right now for her in her life.

Understand What’s Contributing to the Stress

Stress is something that everyone deals with, even your aging family member. It’s not always easy to understand what’s causing stress for your senior, though. Sit down with her and talk about the different factors that could be at play. There are so many that might be affecting her ranging from her health to worry about family members and even not wanting to be a burden to anyone who loves her.

Make a Plan

Once you both have a clearer picture of what is causing stress, it’s time to make a plan. For many seniors, dealing with daily tasks is a huge source of stress. Some of those tasks might be getting a lot more difficult for your senior to handle on her own, so bringing in elder care providers to help is an awesome solution.

Keep Lists Handy

Another source of stress for your senior might be feeling as if her life is out of control. This often happens when health issues are getting worse or your senior is just feeling worse in general. Keeping lists of helpful information handy is one way to work through this stressor. When your aging family member has a handle on the information she needs, she may be able to relax more readily.

Put Solutions to Work

Whatever solutions you and your senior talk about, make sure that you implement them as soon as you can. Having access to home care professionals can do so much for your elderly family member, but she has to let them help. Some of the plans that you make with your senior might work right away, others might need a little more time to give her the results that she really wants to see. She needs to give them time to be effective.

Re-evaluate the Plan Regularly

Another aspect of this method involves re-evaluating the situation on a regular basis. This gives you and your senior a chance to talk about what is working and what isn’t. Perhaps she wanted to wait to try elder care professionals, for instance, and is now ready to talk more about what they can do for her. By taking that time to talk again about what’s going on, you’re able to help her to find answers that will give her long-term relief from the stress she was experiencing.

Talk to your aging family member about what else you can do for her. This time of her life is one that you probably want to help her to enjoy as much as possible, so you need to know what is causing her to experience negative feelings.
