One of the biggest aspects of being a caregiver is managing your elderly family member’s health as best you can. But are you ignoring your own health issues in favor of concentrating on your aging adult’s health issues?
Your Health Is Significant in Terms of Caregiving
If you’re not feeling well or you’re ignoring your own chronic health issues, then you simply can’t be the caregiver that you want to be. It’s not even that you could try harder, because you’re literally not capable of giving that which you do not have to give. As a result, you’re shortchanging your senior.
Ignoring Your Health Can Have Ramifications for Your Aging Adult
You might not think that your own health is going to affect your elderly family member, but think about what your senior isn’t able to do on days when her health is suffering. She’s not able to give her all and she may finally be forced to pull back to take care of herself. That can easily be you and you can’t afford a forced time out.
Stop Making Excuses
The bottom line is that you can’t keep making excuses about your own health as a family caregiver. Whether you’re telling yourself that you don’t have time or that your health isn’t important, those are not valid reasons for neglecting your own health. The easy way to start sorting through your excuses is to start making a list. Write down all of the reasons you’re avoiding your own health. Then you can tackle those reasons one by one.
Make Your Health a Priority
Even if you feel that some of your excuses are valid, such as not having enough time, start looking for solutions. Hiring elderly care providers can free up your own time. This not only allows you to visit your own doctor, but to take care of other activities that improve your health, such as exercising or eating healthy meals. As you prioritize your own health and well-being, you’ll start to see results in all areas of your life, not just as a caregiver.
Keeping up with your own health ensures that you’ll be there for your elderly family member whenever she needs you the most.
