4 Ways Elderly Care Can Reduce Boredom

August 16, 2019Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Elderly Care in Redington Beach FL, Reducing Boredom in Seniors

No one likes being bored. Yet, many older adults find themselves spending a great deal of their days feeling bored and wondering what to do with their time. This may be especially true if your aging relative lives alone and doesn’t get out of the house much. Boredom can negatively impact quality of life. It can also cause emotional problems like feeling as though they have no purpose in life, restlessness, and like no one cares about them. The good news is that there are ways to decrease boredom in the lives of older adults and elderly care can help. Below are just 4 of the ways elderly care can reduce boredom for your aging relative.

#1: Trip to the Greenhouse

Lots of older adults enjoy growing things. Flowers can brighten up their yard and caring for them can give the senior something to do. In addition, working in flower beds offers some exercise. However, if your older family member has trouble getting out of the house, they may not be able to get to a greenhouse to purchase flowers for their yard. An elderly care provider can drive them to the greenhouse and help them while they select flowers and plants.

#2: Organize a Card Club

If your aging relative enjoys playing cards, organizing a card club where friends come over to play for a few hours. Not only does playing cards give them something fun to fill their time with, having a card club also gives them an opportunity to socialize with others. An elderly care provider can assist them with inviting friends, deciding what kinds of snacks to serve, and getting the house ready for company.

#3: Go Shopping

A day out at favorite stores can relieve the boredom of being stuck in the house day after day. An elderly care provider can drive them to the mall or other stores they enjoy for a little retail therapy. Even if your older family member doesn’t buy anything, just spending the day window shopping can give them a break from the doldrums of day after day at home.

#4: Enjoy a Movie

Having a movie day with an elderly care provider can be a great way for seniors who are bedbound to spend the day. After all, watching movies alone isn’t nearly as fun as watching them with someone else! The elderly provider can offer companionship and someone to talk about the movie with.
