Five Things Senior Care Services Do for People With Alzheimer’s

March 18, 2021Becky MoultrieAlzheimer's and Dementia, Blog Posts, Personal Care

More than six million U.S. adults are dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. If it’s your mom, senior care is an important consideration. Your family needs to start talking about care plans right now and in the future.

No two cases of Alzheimer’s are identical, but some of the issues that occur are similar. Forgetfulness makes it unsafe for someone with Alzheimer’s to cook a meal without supervision. Some people start to wander and become lost, while others become afraid to leave home. Here are five senior care services your mom may need as Alzheimer’s disease progresses.

Meal Preparation

One problem with short-term memory loss involves simple tasks like remembering something is cooking on the stove or in the oven. Many Alzheimer’s patients start to cook something, forget about it, and end up starting kitchen fires. Turning off power or gas to the range is the best option for preventing fires.

Caregivers can cook meals and snacks for your mom. She’ll have foods she wants to eat on a regular schedule. Caregivers can make sure she’s staying hydrated, too.

Cleaning

Your mom may clean, but she may not be cleaning correctly. She starts to wipe down the counters but gets sidetracked. Only one section got cleaned.

The other issue is that Alzheimer’s can make it hard to read and understand bottle labels. She’s cleaning windows with a blue liquid she thinks is window cleaner, but it’s really dish soap. Hire caregivers and the cleaning is done properly.

Medication Reminders

Your mom’s doctor likely has her on one Alzheimer’s medication to start and then a second will be added as the disease progresses. Remembering to take her medications on her own is unlikely. She needs someone to remind her and make sure she takes them. A senior care provider can ensure that your senior takes the right medication at the right time.

Transportation

One of the first concerns with Alzheimer’s is the ability to safely drive. Slowed reaction times and memory loss can make it hard to safely drive the car from point A to point B. Your mom needs a safe driver escorting her to appointments and area businesses.

With senior care aides driving her around, you don’t have to worry about your mom forgetting how to get home, remembering to use her signals, or braking quickly enough. Take away her keys as soon as the doctor says to. With a driver, you know she’s safe on days she has to go out.

Companionship

One thing your mom may need most is companionship services. She’ll appreciate having someone to help her with activities like gardening. She’ll need someone for direction when she’s going for walks or remembering what she was going to do next.

Talk to a senior care specialist to learn more about pricing and adding and removing services. You’ll love having flexible services that meet your mom’s changing care needs.
