Have You Talked to Your Mom About Her Plan to Age in Place?

October 14, 2022Becky MoultrieAging in Place, Blog Posts, Home Care

What are your mom’s wishes as she gets older? If her health and mobility change, does she want to live with you or another family member? Does she want to downsize to a retirement community or is she happier getting to stay in her current home?

Her happiness is important to her well-being. Make sure you’re listening to what she wants and coming up with an elder care plan that ensures that happens.

What Health Issues Is She Facing?

Has your mom’s doctor diagnosed her with any health issues? If so, how are her needs likely to change over the months and years? It’s important to consider where she will need help in the future.

Her doctor tells her she has rheumatoid arthritis. When it flares up, she might have a hard time getting around the home and need to sit around more than usual. If it affects the joints in her hands, she may struggle to prepare meals or get dressed.

The most common chronic health conditions include high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol, and heart disease. All of these can impact your mom’s daily life. From special dietary concerns to the need to take medications, you have to consider what she can do without cues and what she forgets to do.

How Many People Visit Your Mom?

Isolation and loneliness can impact your mom’s health. Do family and friends stop by regularly to join your mom for a meal, take her shopping, or spend time talking to her? If not, she could become lonely.

With caregivers in her home, she has someone to talk to all week. She’ll have the company she needs and won’t be isolated.

Is Her Home Designed With Aging in Mind?

Is your mom’s home designed to adjust to her changing needs? If she has arthritis and suddenly cannot manage her stairs, is she going to be able to get in and out of her house? If she has to climb a flight of stairs to exit the house in an emergency, that can be a problem.

You may need to look at her home’s layout and see if she could move to the main level. Is the floor with an exterior door equipped with living space, a bathroom, a kitchen, space to do the laundry, and a bedroom? If so, your mom could move to that level and avoid having to use stairs.

If that won’t work, hire an elder care aide to do the laundry. Her caregiver can also help with transportation, medication reminders, and meal preparation. With a helping hand, she’s able to maintain her independence.

With the help of elder care, your mom maintains her independence and stays in her home. You don’t have to worry about her being alone and having difficulty completing daily chores. Everyone is happy. Talk to an advisor to schedule your mom’s elder care services.
