How to Help Make Your Elderly Loved One’s Home Safer for Her

Home Care in Gulfport FLHome safety is a huge concern for family caregivers when it comes to their elderly loved ones. There are some really simple changes you can make that can drastically improve your loved one’s safety at home.

Check the Lighting in Each Room

If the lighting in your elderly loved one’s home is poor, she’s much more liable to trip or to run into furniture that she could have otherwise avoided. Check the lighting to make sure that it’s bright. If you need to make the room brighter, start with stronger bulbs or even changing out the fixtures. While you’re at it, make sure that light switches are easy for your loved one to get to in each room.

Look for Problems with Rugs

Rugs can pose a specific safety hazard because they can easily roll, flip, or slip, causing your elderly loved one to trip easily. Try using carpet tape to secure throw rugs to the floor or choose rugs that have a non-slip backing on the underside. Look for frayed areas in carpeting, too, since that can also cause a tripping hazard.

Move Items She Uses Frequently to Ensure They’re Easy to Access

Take a look at how your loved one’s often-used items are stored. If they’re stored in places that are difficult to access, such as high cabinets, then that can present a problem for your loved one. Try rearranging cabinets, closets, and shelves to keep the items your loved one uses most often at waist height or lower.

Make Accessing Higher Items Easier

Sometimes, though, you can’t change an item’s location for one reason or another. It’s important to make sure that your loved one can safely access those types of items. One way to do that is by making sure that your loved one has a sturdy step stool with a hand rail and non-skid steps to keep it from sliding. Whenever possible, help your loved one to access higher items instead of letting her do it herself.

If you’re still not sure how safe your elderly loved one’s home is for her, talk to her home care providers about changes you can make that will help.
