Your elderly family member’s cardiovascular system includes her heart and all the blood vessels that carry blood to and from her heart. If she’s prone to problems with her cardiovascular system, your elderly family member needs to take some action now to stay healthy.
Make Cholesterol Checks a Regular Part of Her Doctor’s Visits
A major component of cardiovascular health is your aging family member’s cholesterol counts. Talk to her doctor and determine how often her levels should be checked. It’s also a good idea for you to learn as much as you can about cholesterol and what the different levels and numbers mean for your senior’s health. What your elderly family member eats and exercise are two important factors for controlling cholesterol levels.
Have Her Blood Pressure Checked Regularly
Blood pressure can also tell you a lot about your aging family member’s cardiovascular health. Talk to your elderly family member’s doctor about how you can help to manage your senior’s blood pressure. If her blood pressure is normally rather high, her doctor may recommend medication to bring it down to more manageable levels. From there, exercise and diet can keep it in check.
Does She Smoke?
If your aging family member is a smoker, that can be bad news in terms of her cardiovascular health. Cutting back just a little bit may not seem like much, particularly if you want her to quit for good, but it can make a tiny bit of difference to her health. Work with your aging family member’s doctor to find a solution that works.
Include Exercise in Her Plan
Exercise is essential for cardiovascular health. The main reason is that it gets the blood flowing throughout your elderly family member’s body and helps to build her stamina. It also helps to improve lung function, which is especially important if she’s a smoker. Before you kick off any exercise plans, however, make sure that you talk with her doctor and ensure that it’s safe for your elderly family member to begin exercising regularly.
Hiring home care providers to help can give your elderly family member the edge that she needs with meal preparation and other important aspects of her plan.
