As people get older, their immune systems don’t work as well as they once did. It doesn’t respond as quickly when germs invade. As a result, it’s easier for older adults to get ill. There are also fewer immune cells in the body, which makes it harder for the body to heal when an injury or illness occurs. However, there are ways older adults can support the immune system and help it to work better. Below are 5 ways to boost your aging relative’s immune system health.
#1: Get Enough Nutrients
Because older adults often have less of an appetite than they did when they were younger, it’s important that they make every bite count in terms of nutrition. Help them to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. In fact, experts recommend that half the plate be filled with fruits and vegetables. One quarter of the plate should be a lean source of protein. The final quarter should be filled with whole grains.
#2: Reduce Stress
Stress has an impact on the way the immune system works. If your older family member is experiencing chronic stress, such as from worrying about their health, finances, or other things, help them to find ways to relieve the stress. They might learn to meditate, take a yoga class, or spend more time doing activities they enjoy and that take their mind off their worries.
#3: Quit Smoking
Smoking further impairs the immune system. It also makes it more likely that your older family member will develop respiratory infections, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. If your older family member smokes, it’s never too late for them to quit. They should talk to their doctor about smoking cessation techniques and treatments. The doctor may be able to prescribe medicine to help them quit.
#4: Get Enough Sunshine
Exposure to sunshine causes the skin to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential to good immune health. During the summer months, your aging relative can get enough sunshine by spending 10 to 15 minutes outside. During the winter, it can be a little harder. On warm, sunny days, encourage them to spend some time outside, perhaps drinking a cup of coffee or cocoa on the front porch or taking a short walk.
#5: Use Home Care
Using home care can help your older family member to be healthier and do the things they need to in order to keep their immune system working well. One of the things a home care provider can do is to cook healthy meals that include the necessary nutrients. They can also prepare healthy snacks. Home care providers can also be an excellent way to reduce the stress in a senior’s life. By knowing that someone is available to help them, the older adult may worry less.
