After your dad’s heart attack, you spend each day helping him out. You’re able to work from home, which is helpful in being a family caregiver as you work in between the chores you help him complete. But, you still need to stay on track. This means getting through morning routines without running into problems. Here are a few tips to maintain a schedule and how home care can play a role in caring for your senior loved one.
Arrive Early
Arrive as early as you can. While your dad is still sleeping, you can get some tasks started. Have the coffee maker set up and ready to turn on. Make a hearty breakfast that can be ignored while it cooks.
Once tasks are done, you have a jump start on your morning. Get the bathroom set up with the things your dad needs for his shower. Once he’s in the shower, you can change his sheets or make his bed if he doesn’t need you right there helping him. Set a load of laundry on a timer to allow time for your dad to complete his shower.
If delivery services are available in your dad’s area, arrange to have groceries and prescriptions delivered. It saves a lot of time, especially if your dad has a hard time getting in and out of your car.
Use Leftovers to Simplify Meals

Home Care in Redington Beach FL
Start the day with breakfasts that can cook without you having to stand over the oven. A quiche made with a store-bought pie crust takes little time to make. A strata is even easier as it uses toast cubes, scrambled egg mixture, vegetables, meats, and cheese and is slowly baked. Baked oatmeal is also easy to prepare and doesn’t need you sitting over it.
Once breakfast is done, you have the start to lunch, too. That same quiche your dad had with fruit salad for breakfast, can become dinner if you add a cup of soup or a tossed salad.
Last night’s dinner can be the next day’s lunch. For example, take the meatballs from last night’s spaghetti and meatballs and turn them into meatball grinders. Serve them with a quick salad. You’ll spend less time on prep this way.
Keep a List on a Dry Erase Board
Have a dry-erase board set up with a list of all of the daily, weekly, and monthly chores that need to be completed. Use a permanent marker to write them out, and a dry-erase pen to check them off. Your dad can chip in where he’s able.
Partner With Home Care Providers
Sometimes, you’ll have pressing business assignments that require sharper focus and all of your attention. Make sure you don’t jeopardize your career by putting your dad’s every need first. Home care providers can help your dad when you are busy and must focus your attention on other things.
