How Can Vitamin D Help Your Elderly Loved One?

September 1, 2021Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Healthy Habits, Nutrition

There are many different vitamins that can help to improve your elderly loved one’s health. As their family caregiver, one of the vitamins you should focus on making sure your elderly loved one gets enough of is Vitamin D. This vitamin is made by a person’s body in response to being out in the sun. However, there are many supplements and foods that have Vitamin D in them, as well. It might be helpful to learn more about how Vitamin D can help your elderly loved one.

Strengthening Bones

Research shows that Vitamin D is essential when trying to strengthen muscles and bones. If someone’s body doesn’t get enough of this vitamin, they can’t properly absorb calcium. Calcium is also needed for better bone health. If your elderly loved one isn’t getting enough of either of these, they have an increased risk for osteoarthritis, bone deterioration, and other bone health issues. Now that you know how important Vitamin D is for your elderly loved one’s bones, you can get them companion care at home. The elder care providers can help your elderly loved one to add more Vitamin D to their diet.

Fighting Viruses and Diseases

Your elderly loved one can fight off viruses and diseases better if they are getting enough Vitamin D. Research shows that this vitamin helps to prevent rickets, osteoporosis, certain cancers, heart disease, the flu, and many other health issues. However, if you and senior care providers can help your elderly loved one to get enough Vitamin D, they can stay healthier.

Reducing Depression

Does your elderly loved one experience a lot of depression? Even if they only have depression in the winter, Vitamin D can help to prevent it. Research shows that people who have higher Vitamin D levels experience little to no depression. If your elderly loved one is currently experiencing depression, don’t worry. You can get them companion care at home. These elderly care providers can ensure your loved one is going out in the sun or eating enough foods with Vitamin D.

Reducing Inflammation

Does your elderly loved one have a chronic inflammatory disease? Some examples might include inflammatory bowel disease, asthma, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, arthritis, or chronic kidney disease. If so, making sure they get enough Vitamin D every day can help to reduce the inflammation in their body. By doing this, some of their symptoms can be decreased.

Conclusion

There are so many benefits of Vitamin D. If you are caring for your elderly loved one, you should do what you can to ensure they are getting enough Vitamin D from the sun and from the foods that they eat.
