When you’re caring for someone you love, there’s a lot that goes into ensuring that she’s got what she needs, when she needs it. That includes having help, even if your senior is convinced that she’s got a full handle on everything that’s going on. Whether your elderly family member agrees with you or not, these steps can help you both to communicate your perspective.
Share Your Concerns with Her
You might feel very much as if you’ve expressed to your senior what concerns you about her situation. From your perspective, you might have gone into elaborate detail about what has you worried and why you feel like she needs extra help. Try doing it again. This time make sure you’re truly getting to the base issue and being specific about what you’re concerned about.
Give Equal Time to Her Concerns
Once you’ve had your say, make sure you listen carefully to what your elderly family member is telling you. Part of being your senior’s caregiver involves making sure you’re meeting all of her needs and that means not just the ones that you see, but the ones that she sees as well. It’s important to keep her perspective in mind as you make decisions about her care.
Take Everything to Her Doctor
You might feel as if you need some sort if “tie breaker” after you talk to your senior. You might both feel as if you’re at opposite sides of this situation, but you may be closer to each other on this than you think. Talk to your senior’s doctor about what each of you have brought up for the other and examine how you can deal with it. Her doctor can help both of you to see what’s realistic and most important in terms of accommodating her health.
Put a Plan in Place
After you’re done gathering information, it’s time to put a plan together. Your senior might agree that giving elderly care providers a chance to help her out is something you can try. No plan is carved in stone. You both may find that as you put a plan together and put it in motion, you need to make changes in order to ensure that your senior really has the assistance that she truly does need.
Putting all of these steps together gives you a chance to ensure that your elderly family member’s needs are met consistently.
