How to Share the Responsibilities when Caring for Someone with Alzheimer’s Disease

Senior Care in Gulfport FL

Senior Care in Gulfport FLThe responsibilities of someone who is caring for an elder with Alzheimer’s disease extends past a normal 9-to-5 job. As the disease progresses, the caregiver will be expected to provide around-the-clock care and supervision of the senior. This is a huge undertaking for just one person and can often lead to feelings of caregiver burnout or depression.

To prevent this from happening to you, do not be afraid to ask for help. Enlist the help of other family members or a senior care provider in order to make sure all of the elder’s needs are being met without taking up all of your time. In order to delegate the responsibilities and take a huge weight off of your shoulders, here are some tips that will help.

  • Make sure the timing is right. Is your family member or friend currently stressed out or exhausted over their own responsibilities? Then they are most likely not the person to ask for help. Instead, either wait until the timing is right or ask another friend or family member you can trust.
  • Come up with a list. Once you are able to get one or several volunteers, create a list of tasks you need help with. Then, allow them to choose the ones they would like to handle. This may include taking care of the finances, completing household chores, or preparing the meals.
  • Think about their strengths. Everyone has strengths, which should be considered when delegating the responsibilities. If one person enjoys spending time in the kitchen, allow them to help prepare the meals. If another is excellent with paperwork, they can be in charge of the finances and bill payments.
  • Get professional help. Family members and friends may have enough things on their to-do list in their own personal lives, making it too overwhelming to help you care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Fortunately, a professional senior care provider can be hired to either assist with the daily tasks or take over for you while you get a much-needed break. A home care agency can help you find the perfect caregiver who has undergone a background check and has the experience you are looking for.

When seeking help with your caregiving tasks, it is important that you consider people who you can trust. With these tips, you will be able to easily get the help you need, as well as make sure everyone knows what their caregiving role is.
