What Are the Best Ways for Your Loved One to Get Moving?

Senior Care in Seminole FLExercise can be very important for your elderly loved one, but if she’s not used to moving she might not be excited about the idea. Always start out with your loved one’s doctor so that you can make sure that she’s healthy enough to be able to exercise regularly. He can determine what kinds of exercise are best for her and make suggestions that can help her to get and to stay active.

Use Walking Poles

If your loved one feels that walking isn’t for her because she uses a cane or other mobility tools, try using walking poles. These are poles that your loved one holds in each hand and that help to stabilize her as she walks. They also help to make walking a full body workout while taking some of the strain out of the activity.

Try Balance Exercises

Exercises that help your loved one to develop her balance and flexibility can be less intimidating than activities like walking or swimming. Try suggesting yoga or Tai Chi as a workout for your loved one. There are programs designed specifically for older people. These often feature modified exercises and poses so that your loved one can build up her strength and her stamina.

Go with Fun Activities

Above all, your loved one needs to enjoy the activities that she tries. If she’s not having any fun, she likely won’t want to continue. Some elderly loved ones go to Zumba classes or Jazzercise classes regularly because they enjoy them so very much. They may not have believed that they would before they started, but the activities were fun, so they stuck with them.

Stay Consistent

And that brings up the next requirement. Your loved one’s activity level needs to be consistent in order for her to get the best results. If she only goes once or twice a month to her classes or for walks, she’s not getting the best benefit out of those activities. Stick with her doctor’s advice about how often she should exercise, but make sure that her activity level remains as consistent as possible.

Your loved one’s senior care providers can have other ideas that can work for your loved one, too.
