Top 3 Healthy Heart Tips for Your Elderly Loved One

April 1, 2021Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Heart, Seniors & Health Issues

Everyone should pay attention to their heart health. This is one of the most important aspects of a person’s health. If you are caring for your elderly loved one, you should learn about various heart health tips. These tips can help your elderly loved one to keep their heart healthy and prevent heart health issues. Keep reading here today to find out more about the top 3 healthy heart tips that you can share with your elderly loved one.

Increasing the Amount of Physical Activity

How much is your elderly loved one moving around at this point in time? As many people get older, they stop being as active as they used to be. While it is normal for elderly people to not walk miles and miles at a time, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be moving around every day. In fact, research shows that elderly people should still be getting a minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity every week. It is highly recommended that physical activity is being done every single day.

There are numerous ways that your elderly loved one can start increasing the amount of their physical activity. Some of the things they can do include the following:

  • Go bowling with you and/or elderly care providers
  • Go for daily walks
  • Get a stationary bike or a treadmill and use those
  • Gardening
  • Dance around their living room
  • Take a Silver Sneakers exercise class

You should talk to your elderly loved one about these physical activities. Then, your elderly loved one can decide which activities they are going to do on certain days.

Incorporating Heart-Healthy Food Into Their Diet

Another way that your elderly loved one can keep their heart healthier is by incorporating more heart-healthy food into their diet. This is one of the most important tips for preventing heart disease. It can be tough to implement, especially if someone is used to eating unhealthy food most of the time.

However, there are some ways that you and elderly care providers can help your loved one to incorporate heart-healthy food into their diet. Some of the ways this can be done include the following:

  • Choose to eat an apple instead of a cookie once a week
  • Decide to eat oatmeal once a week for breakfast instead of sugary cereal
  • Eliminate one red meat for one lean meat every week
  • Eliminate one pop for one glass of water

If your elderly loved one starts making some healthier choices in regard to what they eat and drink, they can start developing healthier habits in their daily life. This can do a lot for protecting their heart health.

Incorporating More Stress-Relief Techniques Into Their Day

It is very important that your elderly loved one get rid of or reduce their stress. Stress is a contributing factor to heart disease. If your elderly loved one is stressed out a lot, there are some ways they can lower their stress levels. Some of the ways they can do this include the following:

  • Doing a puzzle with you or one of their elderly care providers
  • Taking a walk
  • Talking to a friend or a neighbor
  • Going to support groups
  • Doing yoga
  • Practicing meditation

These are just some stress-relief techniques that your elderly loved one can try. There are many other ways they can lower their stress levels, as well.

Conclusion

These are the top 3 healthy heart tips that you should share with your elderly loved one. If your elderly loved one starts doing these things today and keeps up with them, they can make huge positive changes in their heart health.
