Blood pressure testing is something that your senior is likely familiar with from trips to her doctor. But did you know that she could test her blood pressure at home? If your senior has high blood pressure, testing at home can really help to get a handle on what helps and what doesn’t so that you and she don’t waste any time.
Home Testing Is More Accurate Than You Might Think
It used to be that the most accurate form of blood pressure testing was found in a doctor’s office. It’s been possible to test blood pressure levels at grocery stores and pharmacies, too, but that’s not necessarily convenient. Home testing is incredibly convenient and it’s a lot more portable and accurate now than in the past. Some models are small enough to fit on your senior’s wrist and then go in a pocket until she needs it again.
Testing at Home Lets You See Patterns
There’s a lot that home blood pressure testing can tell you and your senior. How she responds to stress, to certain foods, and to adequate rest can all affect her blood pressure. She may be able to see how meditation or exercise can lower her blood pressure once she’s regularly testing. It’s important to write down the date, the time, and the results. Keeping track of other information can give contextual details, but it’s not necessary unless her doctor requests it.
It’s Important to Be Consistent
Something to remember about home testing is that consistency is really important. Having a consistent amount of data helps you and her doctor to see what’s going on with her blood pressure. It’s no big deal to miss a test or two, but you don’t want to stop completely. Elder care providers can be a huge help with home monitoring. They can remind her that it’s time to test or even help her to take the reading and record the results.
Your Senior’s Doctor Will Want to See Results
Your senior’s doctor will find her results interesting, especially as you and she adjust medication, her diet, and any other changes she’s planning to make. Your elderly family member may not need to test her blood pressure at home forever, but it can make so much about treating her high blood pressure easier to do.
Managing high blood pressure properly is crucial because of the ways that it impacts your senior’s overall health. She may not be excited about using a home monitor, but she may appreciate how it simplifies her treatment plan.
