If your elderly family member has diabetes, her dietary choices matter a great deal. Eating healthier food choices can help her to reduce complication risks and get her blood sugars under better control. She may find that balancing her diet with a little bit of exercise is just what she needs to start feeling a lot better on a regular basis.
Lean Meats
Leaner meats, like poultry, and fish are excellent choices for your senior’s diet. Fattier fish, like salmon, is higher in omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for brain and body healthy. Lean cuts of red meat are something your senior doesn’t have to give up completely, but they should make an appearance a little less often on her menu.
Higher Fiber Foods
Fiber is something that helps to lower your senior’s glucose levels, so it’s an important addition to her diet. There are plenty of ways that your senior can add fiber to her diet. One of the best ways can be with foods like beans and lentils, because these foods also have plenty of protein. Grains can be a good choice for fiber, but they need to be grains like whole wheat and brown rice to have the benefits she needs.
Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are always a good choice. They’ve got plenty of vitamins and minerals, which your senior needs regardless of the health issues she’s battling. Many also are good sources of fiber, which may be a more palatable way for your senior to get her fiber. Dark, leafy greens are a particularly good choice for your senior because there are lots of nutrients in these vegetables.
Lots and Lots of Water
Something your senior might not realize is important for diabetes care is plenty of fresh water. First, it always helps for your senior to be hydrated. But drinking plenty of water helps to ensure that your elderly family member’s system is able to properly flush excess blood sugar out of her body without taxing her kidneys too much. If she is in doubt about how much water is enough, her doctor is a good source of information.
Always talk to your senior’s doctor about what dietary choices are right for her. It’s not always easy to get used to a new way of eating, especially if cooking is difficult. Elder care providers can take over the cooking tasks for your senior so that she can relax and enjoy eating healthy, tasty meals on a regular basis.
