The beginning of the calendar year is typically when people look at resolutions and goals, which makes January the best time for Get a Balanced Life Month. This yearly celebration is designed to remind you to seek out balance in your life between your obligations and your personal needs. As a family caregiver, this is an especially important thing for you to do. The more balanced your life is, the better you’ll be able to care for your elderly family member.
Look at the Balance You’ve Got in Caregiving
Chances are very good that you’re not just a family caregiver. You have other obligations that require your time, energy, and attention. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to determine where you’re most needed. Sometimes that means taking a step back and looking at what’s working for you and what isn’t so that you can start to make changes.
Find Ways to Get Additional Help
One of the biggest ways for a family caregiver to start to find better balance is to get some help lined up. That can sound impossible, though, especially if you don’t have family members nearby who can help. Hiring elder care providers maybe doesn’t seem like something you can do, but you would be surprised. Elder care services can help on many different levels, depending on your needs and your senior’s needs.
Prioritize Your Own Needs
You’re also going to need to look more closely at whether you’re meeting your own needs or not. This can be a huge problem for caregivers and it can lead directly to burnout very quickly. Prioritizing your own needs isn’t selfish. It’s how you make sure that you’re able to continue to care for your elderly family member. Look at your health, your social needs, and anything else that you might be neglecting.
Follow through on Your Plans
As you determine what you need and how you can meet those needs, make sure you’re following through on your plans. When you do, you’re going to start to see results that work for you instead of against you. It also helps to periodically reassess what you’re doing to make sure that it’s still working for you. If there are things that aren’t working, you can change them.
Take the opportunity provided by Get a Balanced Life Month to really look at how you can ensure that your life and your senior’s life are balanced and humming right along.
