It’s not unusual at all for some people to have trouble accepting help from others. When you’re a caregiver, though, you need all the help that you can get from as many people as you can. So learning how to accept help is really important.<\/p>\n

Stop Being Shy<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the biggest reasons that caregivers might tend to turn down help is that they feel odd accepting help from others. You might think that if you’re being an effective caregiver you don’t need any help, but that’s not the case. If you can get over being shy about accepting help and needing help, you’re going to realize that you get far more offers of help than you might realize.<\/p>\n

Just Say “Yes”<\/strong><\/p>\n

You might start an experiment in order to help you get over turning down help. Start responding to offers of help with “yes” instead of “no.” When you start doing that on a regular basis, you might be surprised just how much help you’re getting. If saying yes to everything seems too scary, set a time limit. For example, everything on a certain day gets a “yes” response. From there, you can branch out.<\/p>\n

Have Some Tasks on Hand<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sometimes people make a general offer of help, but then that leaves you standing there stumped. You have an offer of help, but it’s so generic that you’re not sure how to respond or if you should. Start keeping a list of running tasks, big and small, that you’d love to have help with. Then, then next time that someone offers to help you in general, whip out the list. Ask if they can help with a specific task from the list.<\/p>\n

Talk to a Professional<\/strong><\/p>\n

For some people, accepting help from others is more than just a little bit difficult. It can actually be a debilitating problem. If that describes you to a certain extent, then it might be time for you to talk to a therapist about working through whatever is blocking you from accepting help. Doing so is only going to improve your capability as a caregiver and it’s worth the time and effort you spend on breaking through those issues.<\/p>\n

There’s nothing bad about accepting help from other people as a caregiver. Working your way through that difficulty is a huge part of being an effective caregiver. Don’t keep yourself and your senior from the help that you need.<\/p>\n
