\"\"Denial is a powerful force and it\u2019s one that you might run into more often than you expect as a caregiver. The most common place you\u2019re going to run into denial is from other family members, believe it or not. They may be in the dark completely about what your senior needs and what her life is really like right now.<\/p>\n

Why Don\u2019t They Understand?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are so many reasons for family members to have no clue what\u2019s really going on with your elderly family member\u2019s life. They may be willfully ignoring what you\u2019re telling them or they may have misconceptions about what\u2019s going on. Keep in mind also that your elderly family member may literally tell them something different because she doesn\u2019t want them to worry or to be upset. You may not even have access to what she\u2019s sharing with other family members if she doesn\u2019t want you to know.<\/p>\n

Stay Calm in Your Truth<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s really easy to let frustration overtake you when it comes to this sort of situation. But getting angry and starting an argument is not going to help your elderly family member and it\u2019s not going to help you. It definitely won\u2019t help your other family members to get on the same page. Stay calm and know that you know what\u2019s really going on.<\/p>\n

Share What Information You Can<\/strong><\/p>\n

Within the bounds of what you can share, make sure that you\u2019re informing other family members to the best of your ability. This might be something you need to talk to your senior about. If she doesn\u2019t want other family members to know the full extent of her health challenges, you\u2019ll need to respect that boundary.<\/p>\n

Do What You Know Needs to Be Done<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the end, you need to do what you know needs to be done because you\u2019re the one in the trenches with your senior. So if you know that home care providers are the answer to problems you\u2019re experiencing, stick to your guns. Other family members may never understand just how the solutions you put into place solve problems for yourself and for your senior.<\/p>\n

When other family members are in the dark about your senior\u2019s true situation, they might be trying to make life a little more difficult for you. It\u2019s important to remember that they may not be doing this maliciously. They may believe firmly that they\u2019re doing what\u2019s best for your senior, even if they don\u2019t know what the best thing to do really is.<\/p>\n
