\"ParkAs soon as I tell them I have vascular dementia they look at me like I am crazy. I wonder what I have said or done that brings that look. I wish I had never told them<\/em>. <\/span>These are the words of one of Park Station\u2019s memory caf\u00e9 regulars. She is living the reality of stigma<\/span> and shrinking social support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A care companion reports <\/span>I<\/span>t<\/span> i<\/span><\/em>s a relief to spend time with others in the same boat, with similar struggles. We can talk about things that we would not share with any of many family or friends. I get to let my hair down and laugh<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"ParkThe Memory Caf\u00e9 at Park Station has met for only two months, but has generated <\/span>great community participation<\/span>. There was a 12% increase from August to September with people calling about September 8<\/span>th<\/span>\u2019s every week since. <\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> memory caf\u00e9 offers social interaction, laughter, a bit of education a<\/span>nd a whole lot of camaraderie. There are a few memory caf\u00e9 <\/span>guidelines laid out by the Alzheimer\u2019s Association.<\/span><\/p>\n

Memory Caf\u00e9 attendees need to:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0be diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment, early to middle stage Alzheimer\u2019s disease or a <\/span> <\/span> <\/span>related memory disorder<\/span>
\u2022\u00a0have been told of their diagnosis and acknowledge their memory loss<\/span>
\u2022\u00a0understand the purpose of the program, express interest and willingness to participate<\/span>
\u2022\u00a0have no other medical conditions or serious mental illness which might put him\/her or others at <\/span> <\/span>the cafe<\/span>
\u2022\u00a0be a care partner (family or friend) attending with the person diagnosed with the disorder <\/span>—<\/span> <\/span>Care partners are not required to attend but are welcomed<\/span><\/p>\n

Memory caf\u00e9 is for family and friends, professional attendees are limited to the sponsors<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Sept. 8<\/span>th<\/span> gathering will start with some <\/span>Brain Fitness Fun<\/span><\/strong> with puzzles. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Cate, Dementia Coach, <\/span>Assisting Hands of St Pete<\/span><\/strong> <\/span>and <\/span>Arden Courts<\/span> of Largo & Seminole<\/span><\/strong> are sponsoring <\/span> Pinellas Park\u2019s <\/span>monthly <\/span>Park Station Memory Caf\u00e9<\/strong> o<\/span>n <\/span>September 8<\/span>th<\/span> <\/span> from 10-11:30 at <\/span>Roe\u2019s Deli, 5851 Park Blvd. N. <\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Join us in sparking some neurons a<\/span>nd stretches some brain muscles, purchase a drink, snack or meal at Roe\u2019s and get to know one another. <\/span><\/p>\n
